Jonathan and Becky Owen grew up in loving, supportive Christian homes and came to know Christ at an early age. Jonathan, the youngest of five children, lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., until his parents sensed a calling to missions and moved to North Carolina to serve in technical ministry with Wycliffe Bible Translators. While his parents prepared for service, Jonathan became excited about missions work and hoped that God would guide him toward missions as well. They stayed in North Carolina until Jonathan’s junior year of high school, when they moved to serve in Guatemala for two years. Following this term, Jonathan attended Messiah College, where he studied electrical engineering to use in missions work.

Becky was raised in Hatfield, Pa. From an early age, her parents and congregation nurtured her value for missions work home and abroad. For as long as she can remember, Becky has fostered a calling for missions. Following high school, she studied music education at Messiah College but wasn’t sure this was how God wanted to use her long-term.

Jonathan and Becky met at Messiah College through instrumental music groups and the World Christian Fellowship Bible study on campus. Before dating, both had decided they would only date someone willing to step into missions/ministry, if God so led. They began a relationship that led to their marriage in 2004.

After marrying, they wanted to pursue the possibility of missionary service with BIC U.S. World Missions. The timing just wasn’t right, however, and God directed differently. Jonathan attended Evangelical Theological Seminary, where he graduated with a master of divinity in 2009. Becky attended Geneva College and graduated with her master’s in higher education with an administrative leadership concentration. During this time, Jonathan worked for Metro Bank as a database programmer and web developer, and Becky worked for the Coalition for Christian Outreach at Messiah College as the local community service director.

All along, both kept listening for God’s call and direction. One Wednesday night during a prayer meeting at Grantham (Pa.) BIC, God called Jonathan and Becky back to the idea of missions work through a presentation highlighting the Miller family in Malawi. It was as if he said, “Now!” They re-applied to the Missionary Development Program (MDP) through BIC U.S. World Missions and began seriously considering serving in Malawi. Through the MDP, they went on a vision trip to Malawi in 2010, visiting the Lloyds at the Evangelical Bible College of Malawi (EBCoM) in Blantyre and the Millers farther north. This trip helped them discern their calling, and Jonathan and Becky, along with their two children, Micah and Rachel, deployed to Malawi August 2012.

Jonathan currently teaches at EBCoM and supports the BIC Church, Malawi, while Becky stays home with the kids and pursues relationships with other mothers and children nearby. Both are pursuing language learning in Chichewa.
