Teaching and Studying Our BIC Core Values
The act of reading Scripture together is itself an experience of God’s love, through which we preach to our hearts the good news of Jesus, and reshape our experience of the world around this reality. Through sermons, teaching, and corporate study, our core values move from being abstract ideas to convictions written on the hearts of each one of us. These sermon outlines are designed to equip churches to teach and study through our BIC core values.
The outlines for Following Jesus begin on page 42 and include:
- Abide in Me | John 15:1-8
- Take My Yoke Upon You | Matthew 11:25-30
- Walk by the Spirit | Galatians 5:13-26
Art
Engaging All Five Senses
A survey of God’s creation reveals works that engage all five of our senses. Yet, when we engage in corporate worship, we tend to rely on only one or two senses. What if we broke out of the mold and engaged all five senses God has created?
These ideas are meant to give you a starting place to explore new ways to worship. Use your creativity to adapt them to your specific setting and context. Involve all generations in exploring these ideas together!
Recorded Videos & Interviews
Pre-select a group of participants, one group will be interviewers and a second group will be those being interviewed. Give both groups a pre-determined set of questions so that both groups can think through ahead of time. You can then record these interviews to play during a Sunday morning service. Consider having younger generations interview older generations on topics of faith such as practical ways to follow Jesus or how to build our faith.
At Amherst Community Church in Massillon, OH, during a study on Spiritual Gifts, young people in the church identified spiritual gifts they thought they might have been given. Leaders in the church then paired them with adults in the congregation who also felt they had been given those gifts.
Lego Story Telling
Select a story from the life of Christ, a parable, and/or teaching of Christ and gather a pile of Lego. Invite a small group or members of your congregation to recreate this selected story out of Lego. One option would be to break up the story into smaller sections and divide the group of participants into smaller groups, assigning each group a smaller part of the story.
At the end of the allotted time, have the groups retell their part of the story. This could then be shared live in a Sunday morning service or recorded to be played in a service at a different time.
