Eating the Ancient, Bitter, Bitter Scroll: A Reading
Four readers needed, with the fourth needing to be a woman. This is a circle of four people talking with each other in some sense–but also participating in a liturgical reading with whatever connotation that phrase may bring. Each time a Bible passage is read, the person reading it needs to take a step forward to give it more emphasis.
The four people need to see the struggle to be able to express it, but at the same time not get too wrapped up in the struggle because they are still committed to eating the scroll. However, because the dialogue does not give answers to these hard passages, participants and the gathered group will be left with tension rather than resolution.

Word
Teaching and Studying Our BIC Core Values
The act of reading Scripture together is itself an experience of God’s love, through which we preach to our hearts the good news of Jesus, and reshape our experience of the world around this reality. Through sermons, teaching, and corporate study, our core values move from being abstract ideas to convictions written on the hearts of each one of us. These sermon outlines are designed to equip churches to teach and study through our BIC core values.
The outlines for Believing the Bible begin on page 20 and include:
- A Firm Foundation | Matthew 7:24-27
- Hearing and Doing | James 1:22-25
- The Equipping Word | 2 Timothy 3:14-17
Practices
From Spectators to Active Participants
These practices aim to whet our spiritual appetites with many different practices that can help us to live lives of worship with our church families. Some practices may seem out of your comfort zone as a congregation, but you may be surprised to observe the reactions that come from trying something unexpected in the life of the church. There is so much beauty in seeing a congregation transform from a group of spectators to active participants in meaningful worship.
Reading with Jesus Seminar
A Brethren in Christ Approach to Biblical Hermeneutics
In the fall of 2025, the BIC sponsored a series of Impact Seminars focused on how the Brethren in Christ interpret Scripture through the lens of Christ. The seminar from Pastor Zach Spidel is available on video* and could be broken down for a small group or Bible study to watch together over several weeks.
In addition to watching the recordings, we recommend downloading these additional materials, including an advance letter, a pre-reading document, BIC statement on the Bible, the full Power Point presentation, and an annotated bibliography.
About Zach Spidel – Zach pastors East Dayton Fellowship (Ohio) and holds a Ph.D. with a focus on patristic hermeneutics.
*This seminar was recorded via a live stream that experienced a temporary interruption, which is why it is divided into two parts.
